What is Ignition

Ignition is a Platform that enables and enhances SCADA, IIoT, MES, HMI, Alarming, and Reporting. Ignition can be utilized for small HMI applications, edge computing, data aggregation, and large enterprise systems. The platform is based on web client viewing, which makes it inherently friendly for anything with a web browser and on mobile devices through the Ignition app.

One of the unique features of Ignition is it's licensing model - Unlimited tag licenses. Something that was unheard of a decade ago among major SCADA and DCS platforms.  This allows for great flexibly in how you deploy the system and aggregate your data from multiple locations.  Ignition serves as a comprehensive solution for controlling and monitoring industrial processes, facilities, and infrastructure. Ignition combines software and hardware components, allowing real-time data collection and control. Its architecture is SQL Database-centric, and it features cross-platform, web-based deployment through Java Web Start technology.

What are key features of Ignition?

  • Ignition Gateway: The central hub that manages communication between various components. It handles data exchange, security, and configuration.
  • Designer: A powerful tool for creating and configuring SCADA projects. It enables drag-and-drop design, scripting, and visualization.
  • Runtime Clients: These are the end-user interfaces that display real-time data, alarms, and reports.
  • Modules: Ignition offers modular functionality through add-on modules. These include Real-Time Status Control, Alarming, Reporting, Data Acquisition, Scripting, Scheduling, MES (Manufacturing Execution Systems), and Mobile support.
  • Module Marketplace: Similar to app stores, it allows developers to create and share modules for Ignition. Some modules are free, while others are paid.

What Industries is Ignition used for:
Ignition is commonly used in many industrial applications and becoming more common in commercial sized applications as well. These include -
Manufacturing: Ignition adds value to manufacturing environments, including pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, automotive, cosmetics, textiles, and commodities.

  • Water and Wastewater Treatment: Water districts across the country trust Ignition for their mission-critical SCADA systems.
  • Power Generation: Ignition’s real-time monitoring capabilities streamline data throughput, providing accurate insights for power plants and utilities.
  • Agriculture: Ignition can monitor and control processes in agricultural facilities, optimizing efficiency and productivity.
  • Government and Municipalities: Ignition is used in various government applications, such as managing infrastructure, public utilities, and transportation systems.
  • Oil and Gas:
    • Well pad facilities can be spread across thousands of acres and in different states. Ignition can aggregate all data and separate by land lease or other geographies with user-specific credentials.
    • Midstream facilities are transitioning away from traditional DCS to PLC based systems with Ignition utilized for operations and SCADA.
  • Building Automation: Atlas has direct experience utilizing Ignition for a BAS (Building Automation Systems) also known as BMS (Building Management Systems) for commercial and industrial applications such as Clean Rooms.
